Chapter sixteen

Parker

"What do you think of this one?" Penny asks, as I take her hand and draw her toward me.

She lets herself be led, like a docile, little sheep being herded, but there is nothing submissive about Penny Gould beyond appearance, for her determined character is evident at every opportunity for her. This is true both in and out of bed, as I have come to know.

I watch her as she tries on the ring I pointed out to her, and I can’t help but remember the way she was the night before, her body sweaty and naked, the scent of sex heavy in the air around us.

She who has never been with a man before sought me out with such patience and passion, igniting each and every one of my senses, making me desire her more and more with each new kiss, and each maddening touch.

Now, it is hard for me to see her standing upright, clothed and elegant, when the truth is that a part of me is dying to undress her and watch her yield again to the insistent rhythm of our hips as they rub firmly and rhythmically together, quickening their pace until we finally surrender in each other's arms from pleasure.

"I don't know," Penny murmurs, looking at the gold band that is decorated with a single huge diamond. "I think the jewel is too big for my taste."

Penny turns away as she looks over the rest of the rings, completely ignoring the fact that the jeweler is looking at her as if she has nothing in her brain.

But Penny Gould is not like other women, and she knows that about herself. Other girls, like Brittany, for example, would seek out the most expensive, outlandish ring in the whole store and ask me for it, proudly flaunting it for all the world to see. To someone like Brittany, the size and sparkle of the piece are synonymous with the level of love the person feels.

Penny doesn’t follow that kind of thinking. Her style is sophisticated and simple, even rather minimalist and demure. As I look at her it occurs to me that I have never seen her flaunt a truly extravagant piece of jewelry.

Her gaze wanders around the display cases, but I’m convinced that she won’t find anything she likes because she probably keeps thinking that this is all pretend.

I wish that she would enjoy it a little, that she thought about this as if it is really an engagement, but Penny's mind is too fragile for her to allow it to be guided in that way by fantasies.

Sighing with a hint of guilt, I leave the pieces the salesgirl is showing me behind and walk over to Penny, catching her in my arms and wrapping my fingers around her hips as her back leans against my chest.

She tenses up for a moment, but relaxes soon after. In our short time together, I have learned to read her body's signals, and I know that she is made nervous by my touch, but also excited by it.
